Supermassive Kicks for Spinning Black Holes
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent calculations of the recoil velocity in binary black hole mergers have found the kick velocity to be of the order of a few hundred km/s in the case of non-spinning binaries and about 500 km/s in the case of spinning configurations, and have lead to predictions of a maximum kick of up to 1300 km/s. We test these predictions and demonstrate that kick velocities of at least 2500 km/s are possible for equal-mass binaries with appropriate alignments of the spins. Kicks of that magnitude are likely to have significant repercussions for models of black-hole formation, the population of intergalactic black holes and the structure of host galaxies. The Role of Primordial Kicks on Black Hole Merger Rates
Primordial stars are likely to be very massive ≥ 30 M⊙, form in isolation, and will likely leave black holes as remnants in the centers of their host dark matter halos in the mass range 10 − 10 M⊙. Such early black holes, at redshifts z∼ 10, could be the seed black holes for the many supermassive black holes found in galaxies in the local universe. If they exist, their mergers with nearby super...
متن کاملGravitational Recoil from Spinning Binary Black Hole Mergers
The inspiral and merger of binary black holes will likely involve black holes with both unequal masses and arbitrary spins. The gravitational radiation emitted by these binaries will carry angular as well as linear momentum. A net flux of emitted linear momentum implies that the black hole produced by the merger will experience a recoil or kick. Previous studies have focused on the recoil veloc...

Thorne and Kidder give expressions which allow for analytical estimates of the “kick”, i.e. the recoil, produced from asymmetrical gravitational radiation during the interaction of black holes, or in fact any gravitating compact bodies. (The Thorne-Kidder formula uses momentum flux calculations based on the linearized General Relativity of gravitational radiation.) We specifically treat kicks a...
متن کاملHypercompact Stellar Systems around Recoiling Supermassive Black Holes
A supermassive black hole ejected from the center of a galaxy by gravitational wave recoil carries a retinue of bound stars – a “hypercompact stellar system” (HCSS). The numbers and properties of HCSSs contain information about the merger histories of galaxies, the late evolution of binary black holes, and the distribution of gravitational-wave kicks. We relate the structural properties (size, ...

Generic extensions of the standard model predict the existence of ultralight bosonic degrees of freedom. Several ongoing experiments are aimed at detecting these particles or constraining their mass range. Here we show that massive vector fields around rotating black holes can give rise to a strong superradiant instability, which extracts angular momentum from the hole. The observation of super...
